2025-07-23config: move Git config parsing into "environment.c"Patrick Steinhardt1-0/+1
In "config.c" we host both the business logic to read and write config files as well as the logic to parse specific Git-related variables. On the one hand this is mixing concerns, but even more importantly it means that we cannot easily remove the dependency on `the_repository` in our config parsing logic. Move the logic into "environment.c". This file is a grab bag of all kinds of global state already, so it is quite a good fit. Furthermore, it also hosts most of the global variables that we're parsing the config values into, making this an even better fit. Note that there is one hidden change: in `parse_fsync_components()` we use an `int` to iterate through `ARRAY_SIZE(fsync_component_names)`. But as -Wsign-compare warnings are enabled in this file this causes a compiler warning. The issue is fixed by using a `size_t` instead. This change allows us to drop the `USE_THE_REPOSITORY_VARIABLE` declaration. Signed-off-by: Patrick Steinhardt <ps@pks.im> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2025-07-23config: drop `git_config()` wrapperPatrick Steinhardt1-1/+1
In 036876a1067 (config: hide functions using `the_repository` by default, 2024-08-13) we have moved around a bunch of functions in the config subsystem that depend on `the_repository`. Those function have been converted into mere wrappers around their equivalent function that takes in a repository as parameter, and the intent was that we'll eventually remove those wrappers to make the dependency on the global repository variable explicit at the callsite. Follow through with that intent and remove `git_config()`. All callsites are adjusted so that they use `repo_config(the_repository, ...)` instead. While some callsites might already have a repository available, this mechanical conversion is the exact same as the current situation and thus cannot cause any regression. Those sites should eventually be cleaned up in a later patch series. Signed-off-by: Patrick Steinhardt <ps@pks.im> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2025-03-29rm: fix sign comparison warningsArnav Bhate1-12/+9
There are multiple places in loops, where a signed and an unsigned data type are compared. Git uses a mix of signed and unsigned types to store lengths of arrays. This sometimes leads to using a signed index for an array whose length is stored in an unsigned variable or vice versa. get_ours_cache_pos is a special case where i, though derived from a signed variable is never negative. Move this part to the caller side and make i an unsigned argument of the function. Rename i to pos to make it descriptive, now that it is a function argument. Replace signed data types with unsigned data types and vice versa wherever necessary. Where both signed and unsigned data types have been used, define a new variable in the scope of the for loop for use as the iterator. Remove #define DISABLE_SIGN_COMPARE_WARNINGS. 2024-09-13builtin: remove USE_THE_REPOSITORY_VARIABLE from builtin.hJohn Cai1-2/+2
Instead of including USE_THE_REPOSITORY_VARIABLE by default on every builtin, remove it from builtin.h and add it to all the builtins that include builtin.h (by definition, that means all builtins/*.c). Also, remove the include statement for repository.h since it gets brought in through builtin.h. The next step will be to migrate each builtin from having to use the_repository. 2024-09-13builtin: add a repository parameter for builtin functionsJohn Cai1-1/+4

Each of these were checked with gcc -E -I. ${SOURCE_FILE} | grep ${HEADER_FILE} to ensure that removing the direct inclusion of the header actually resulted in that header no longer being included at all (i.e. that no other header pulled it in transitively). ...except for a few cases where we verified that although the header was brought in transitively, nothing from it was directly used in that source file. 2023-07-05git-compat-util: move alloc macros to git-compat-util.hCalvin Wan1-1/+0
alloc_nr, ALLOC_GROW, and ALLOC_GROW_BY are commonly used macros for dynamic array allocation. Moving these macros to git-compat-util.h with the other alloc macros focuses alloc.[ch] to allocation for Git objects and additionally allows us to remove inclusions to alloc.h from files that solely used the above macros. 2023-06-21read-cache*.h: move declarations for read-cache.c functions from cache.hElijah Newren1-0/+1
For the functions defined in read-cache.c, move their declarations from cache.h to a new header, read-cache-ll.h. Also move some related inline functions from cache.h to read-cache.h. The purpose of the read-cache-ll.h/read-cache.h split is that about 70% of the sites don't need the inline functions and the extra headers they include. 2023-06-21sparse-index.h: move declarations for sparse-index.c from cache.hElijah Newren1-0/+1

2023-04-24hash-ll.h: split out of hash.h to remove dependency on repository.hElijah Newren1-0/+2
hash.h depends upon and includes repository.h, due to the definition and use of the_hash_algo (defined as the_repository->hash_algo). However, most headers trying to include hash.h are only interested in the layout of the structs like object_id. Move the parts of hash.h that do not depend upon repository.h into a new file hash-ll.h (the "low level" parts of hash.h), and adjust other files to use this new header where the convenience inline functions aren't needed. This allows hash.h and object.h to be fairly small, minimal headers. It also exposes a lot of hidden dependencies on both path.h (which was brought in by repository.h) and repository.h (which was previously implicitly brought in by object.h), so also adjust other files to be more explicit about what they depend upon. 2022-12-26submodule.c & submodule--helper: pass along "super_prefix" paramÆvar Arnfjörð Bjarmason1-1/+1
Start passing the "super_prefix" along as a parameter to get_submodule_displaypath() and absorb_git_dir_into_superproject(), rather than get the value directly as a global. This is in preparation for subsequent commits, where we'll gradually phase out get_super_prefix() for an alternative way of getting the "super_prefix". Most of the users of this get a get_super_prefix() value, either directly or by indirection. The exceptions are: - builtin/rm.c: Doesn't declare SUPPORT_SUPER_PREFIX, so we'd have died if this was provided, so it's safe to pass "NULL". - deinit_submodule(): The "deinit_submodule()" function has never been able to use the "git -super-prefix". It will call "absorb_git_dir_into_superproject()", but it will only do so from the top-level project. If "absorbgitdirs" recurses will use the "path" passed to "absorb_git_dir_into_superproject()" in "deinit_submodule()" as its starting "--super-prefix". So we can safely remove the get_super_prefix() call here, and pass NULL instead. Signed-off-by: Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason <avarab@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2022-11-21cocci: apply "pending" index-compatibility to some "builtin/*.c"Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason1-4/+4
Apply "index-compatibility.pending.cocci" rule to "builtin/*", but exclude those where we conflict with in-flight changes. As a result some of them end up using only "the_index", so let's have them use the more narrow "USE_THE_INDEX_VARIABLE" rather than "USE_THE_INDEX_COMPATIBILITY_MACROS". Manual changes not made by coccinelle, that were squashed in: * Whitespace-wrap argument lists for repo_hold_locked_index(), repo_read_index_preload() and repo_refresh_and_write_index(), in cases where the line became too long after the transformation. * Change "refresh_cache()" to "refresh_index()" in a comment in "builtin/update-index.c". * For those whose call was followed by perror("<macro-name>"), change it to perror("<function-name>"), referring to the new function. 2022-11-21cocci & cache.h: apply variable section of "pending" index-compatibilityÆvar Arnfjörð Bjarmason1-7/+7
Mostly apply the part of "index-compatibility.pending.cocci" that renames the global variables like "active_nr", which are a shorthand to referencing (in that case) a struct member as "the_index.cache_nr". In doing so move more of "index-compatibility.pending.cocci" to "index-compatibility.cocci". In the case of "active_nr" we'd have a textual conflict with "ab/various-leak-fixes" in "next"[1]. 2022-11-08submodule API & "absorbgitdirs": remove "----recursive" optionÆvar Arnfjörð Bjarmason1-2/+1
Remove the "----recursive" option to "git submodule--helper absorbgitdirs" (yes, with 4 dashes, not 2). This option and all the "else" when "flags & ABSORB_GITDIR_RECURSE_SUBMODULES" is false has never been used since it was added in f6f85861400 (submodule: add absorb-git-dir function, 2016-12-12), which we'd have had to do as "----recursive", a "--recursive" would have errored out. 2022-10-13doc txt & -h consistency: add missing optionsÆvar Arnfjörð Bjarmason1-1/+3
Change those built-in commands that were attempting to exhaustively list the options in the "-h" output to actually do so, and always have *.txt documentation know about the exhaustive list of options. Let's also fix the documentation and -h output for those built-in commands where the *.txt and -h output was a mismatch of missing options on both sides. In the case of "interpret-trailers" fixing the missing options reveals that the *.txt version was implicitly claiming that the command had two operating modes, which a look at the -h version (and studying the documentation) will show is not the case. 2022-08-08rm: integrate with sparse-indexShaoxuan Yuan1-0/+2
Enable the sparse index within the `git-rm` command. The `p2000` tests demonstrate a ~92% execution time reduction for 'git rm' using a sparse index. (sparse-v4) 0.57(0.55+0.02) 0.03(0.03+0.00) -94.7% ---- Also, normalize a behavioral difference of `git-rm` under sparse-index. See related discussion [1]. `git-rm` a sparse-directory entry within a sparse-index enabled repo behaves differently from a sparse directory within a sparse-checkout enabled repo. For example, in a sparse-index repo, where 'folder1' is a sparse-directory entry, `git rm -r --sparse folder1` provides this: rm 'folder1/' Whereas in a sparse-checkout repo *without* sparse-index, doing so provides this: rm 'folder1/0/0/0' rm 'folder1/0/1' rm 'folder1/a' Because `git rm` a sparse-directory entry does not need to expand the index, therefore we should accept the current behavior, which is faster than "expand the sparse-directory entry to match the sparse-checkout situation". Modify a previous test so such difference is not considered as an error. 2022-08-08rm: expand the index only when necessaryShaoxuan Yuan1-2/+3
Remove the `ensure_full_index()` method so `git-rm` does not always expand the index when the expansion is unnecessary, i.e. when <pathspec> does not have any possibilities to match anything outside of sparse-checkout definition. Expand the index when the <pathspec> needs an expanded index, i.e. the <pathspec> contains wildcard that may need a full-index or the <pathspec> is simply outside of sparse-checkout definition. Notice that the test 'rm pathspec expands index when necessary' in t1092 *is* testing this code change behavior, though it will be marked as 'test_expect_success' only in the next patch, where we officially mark `command_requires_full_index = 0`, so the index does not expand unless we tell it to do so. Notice that because we also want `ensure_full_index` to record the stdout and stderr from Git command, a corresponding modification is also included in this patch. The reason we want the "sparse-index-out" and "sparse-index-err", is that we need to make sure there is no error from Git command itself, so we can rely on the `test_region` result and determine if the index is expanded or not. 2021-09-28rm: skip sparse paths with missing SKIP_WORKTREEDerrick Stolee1-1/+3
If a path does not match the sparse-checkout cone but is somehow missing the SKIP_WORKTREE bit, then 'git rm' currently succeeds in removing the file. One reason a user might be in this situation is a merge conflict outside of the sparse-checkout cone. Removing such a file might be problematic for users who are not sure what they are doing. Add a check to path_in_sparse_checkout() when 'git rm' is checking if a path should be considered for deletion. Of course, this check is ignored if the '--sparse' option is specified, allowing users who accept the risks to continue with the removal. This also removes a confusing behavior where a user asks for a directory to be removed, but only the entries that are within the sparse-checkout definition are removed. Now, 'git rm <dir>' will fail without '--sparse' and will succeed in removing all contained paths with '--sparse'. parse_pathspec() populates pathspec, hence we need to clear it once it's no longer needed. seen is xcalloc'd within the same function and likewise needs to be freed once its no longer needed. cmd_rm() has multiple early returns, therefore we need to clear or free as soon as this data is no longer needed, as opposed to doing a cleanup at the end. 2021-04-14rm: ensure full indexDerrick Stolee1-0/+2

2021-04-08rm: honor sparse checkout patternsMatheus Tavares1-11/+24
`git add` refrains from adding or updating index entries that are outside the current sparse checkout, but `git rm` doesn't follow the same restriction. This is somewhat counter-intuitive and inconsistent. So make `rm` honor the sparsity rules and advise on how to remove SKIP_WORKTREE entries just like `add` does. Also add some tests for the new behavior. Suggested-by: Elijah Newren <newren@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Matheus Tavares <matheus.bernardino@usp.br> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2020-02-19rm: support the --pathspec-from-file optionAlexandr Miloslavskiy1-6/+22
Decisions taken for simplicity: 1) It is not allowed to pass pathspec in both args and file. Adjustments were needed for `if (!argc)` block: This code actually means "pathspec is not present". Previously, pathspec could only come from commandline arguments, so testing for `argc` was a valid way of testing for the presence of pathspec. But this is no longer true with `--pathspec-from-file`. During the entire `--pathspec-from-file` story, I tried to keep its behavior very close to giving pathspec on commandline, so that switching from one to another doesn't involve any surprises. However, throwing usage at user in the case of empty `--pathspec-from-file` would puzzle because there's nothing wrong with "usage" (that is, argc/argv array). On the other hand, throwing usage in the old case also feels bad to me. While it's less of a puzzle, I (as user) never liked the experience of comparing my commandline to "usage", trying to spot a difference. Since it's already known what the error is, it feels a lot better to give that specific error to user. Judging from [1] it doesn't seem that showing usage in this case was important (the patch was to avoid segfault), and it doesn't fit into how other commands react to empty pathspec (see for example `git add` with a custom message). Therefore, I decided to show new error text in both cases. In order to continue testing for error early, I moved `parse_pathspec()` higher. Now it happens before `read_cache()` / `hold_locked_index()` / `setup_work_tree()`, which shouldn't cause any issues. 2019-07-25Merge branch 'jc/denoise-rm-to-resolve'Junio C Hamano1-1/+1
"git rm" to resolve a conflicted path leaked an internal message "needs merge" before actually removing the path, which was confusing. This has been corrected. * jc/denoise-rm-to-resolve: rm: resolving by removal is not a warning-worthy event
2019-07-18rm: resolving by removal is not a warning-worthy eventJunio C Hamano1-1/+1
When resolving a conflict on a path in favor of removing it, using "git rm" on it is the standard way to do so. The user however is greeted with a "needs merge" message during that operation: $ git merge side-branch $ edit conflicted-path-1 $ git add conflicted-path-1 $ git rm conflicted-path-2 conflicted-path-2: needs merge rm 'conflicted-path-2' The removal by "git rm" does get performed, but an uninitiated user may find it confusing, "needs merge? so I need to resolve conflict before being able to remove it???" The message is coming from "update-index --refresh" that is called internally to make sure "git rm" knows which paths are clean and which paths are dirty, in order to prevent removal of paths modified relative to the index without the "-f" option. We somehow ended up not squelching this message which seeped through to the UI surface. Use the same mechanism used by "git commit", "git describe", etc. to squelch the message. 2018-08-29convert "oidcmp() != 0" to "!oideq()"Jeff King1-1/+1
This is the flip side of the previous two patches: checking for a non-zero oidcmp() can be more strictly expressed as inequality. Like those patches, we write "!= 0" in the coccinelle transformation, which covers by isomorphism the more common: if (oidcmp(E1, E2)) As with the previous two patches, this patch can be achieved almost entirely by running "make coccicheck"; the only differences are manual line-wrap fixes to match the original code. There is one thing to note for anybody replicating this, though: coccinelle 1.0.4 seems to miss the case in builtin/tag.c, even though it's basically the same as all the others. Running with 1.0.7 does catch this, so presumably it's just a coccinelle bug that was fixed in the interim. Signed-off-by: Jeff King <peff@peff.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
