bp->dev->dev_addr is of type `unsigned char *`. Casting it to a u32 pointer and dereferencing implies dealing manually with endianness, which is error-prone. 2025-09-26net: macb: single dma_alloc_coherent() for DMA descriptorsThéo Lebrun1-39/+41
Move from 2*NUM_QUEUES dma_alloc_coherent() for DMA descriptor rings to 2 calls overall. Issue is with how all queues share the same register for configuring the upper 32-bits of Tx/Rx descriptor rings. Taking Tx, notice how TBQPH does *not* depend on the queue index: #define GEM_TBQP(hw_q) (0x0440 + ((hw_q) << 2)) #define GEM_TBQPH(hw_q) (0x04C8) queue_writel(queue, TBQP, lower_32_bits(queue->tx_ring_dma)); #ifdef CONFIG_ARCH_DMA_ADDR_T_64BIT if (bp->hw_dma_cap & HW_DMA_CAP_64B) queue_writel(queue, TBQPH, upper_32_bits(queue->tx_ring_dma)); #endif To maximise our chances of getting valid DMA addresses, we do a single dma_alloc_coherent() across queues. This improves the odds because alloc_pages() guarantees natural alignment. Other codepaths (IOMMU or dev/arch dma_map_ops) don't give high enough guarantees (even page-aligned isn't enough). Two consideration: - dma_alloc_coherent() gives us page alignment. Here we remove this constraint meaning each queue's ring won't be page-aligned anymore. - This can save some tiny amounts of memory. Fewer allocations means (1) less overhead (constant cost per alloc) and (2) less wasted bytes due to alignment constraints. Example for (2): 4 queues, default ring size (512), 64-bit DMA descriptors, 16K pages: - Before: 8 allocs of 8K, each rounded to 16K => 64K wasted. - After: 2 allocs of 32K => 0K wasted. The tx/rx ring size calculation is somewhat complex and partially hidden behind a macro. Move that out of the {RX,TX}_RING_BYTES() macros and macb_{alloc,free}_consistent() functions into neat separate functions. In macb_free_consistent(), we drop the size variable and directly call the size helpers in the arguments list. In macb_alloc_consistent(), we keep the size variable that is used by netdev_dbg() calls. 2025-09-26net: macb: remove illusion about TBQPH/RBQPH being per-queueThéo Lebrun2-37/+24
The MACB driver acts as if TBQPH/RBQPH are configurable on a per queue basis; this is a lie. A single register configures the upper 32 bits of each DMA descriptor buffers for all queues. Concrete actions: - Drop GEM_TBQPH/GEM_RBQPH macros which have a queue index argument. Only use MACB_TBQPH/MACB_RBQPH constants. - Drop struct macb_queue->TBQPH/RBQPH fields. - In macb_init_buffers(): do a single write to TBQPH and RBQPH for all queues instead of a write per queue. - In macb_tx_error_task(): drop the write to TBQPH. - In macb_alloc_consistent(): if allocations give different upper 32-bits, fail. Previously, it would have lead to silent memory corruption as queues would have used the upper 32 bits of the alloc from queue 0 and their own low 32 bits. - In macb_suspend(): if we use the tie off descriptor for suspend, do the write once for all queues instead of once per queue. In macb_taprio_setup_replace(), the value of start_time is being compared against zero which would never be true since start_time is an unsigned value. Due to this there is a chance that an incorrect config base time value can be used for computation. Fix by checking the value of conf->base_time directly. When the driver is removed the clocks are disabled twice: once in macb_remove and a second time by runtime pm. Disable wakeup in remove so all the clocks are disabled and skip the second call to macb_clks_disable. Always suspend the device as we always set it active in probe. The RMII and RGMII can both support internal or external provided REFCLKs 50MHz and 125MHz respectively. Since this is dependent on the board that the SoC is on this needs to be set via the device tree. This property flag is checked in the MACB DT node so the REFCLK cap is configured the correct way for the RMII or RGMII is configured on the board. The shutdown sequence is protected with 'rtnl_lock()' to serialize access and prevent race conditions while detaching and closing the network device. 2025-05-12net: cadence: macb: Fix a possible deadlock in macb_halt_tx.Mathieu Othacehe1-13/+6
There is a situation where after THALT is set high, TGO stays high as well. Because jiffies are never updated, as we are in a context with interrupts disabled, we never exit that loop and have a deadlock. That deadlock was noticed on a sama5d4 device that stayed locked for days. Use retries instead of jiffies so that the timeout really works and we do not have a deadlock anymore. Stats calculations involve a RMW to add the stat update to the existing value. This is currently not protected by any synchronization mechanism, so data races are possible. Add a spinlock to protect the update. The reader side could be protected using u64_stats, but we would still need a spinlock for the update side anyway. And we always do an update immediately before reading the stats anyway. 2024-10-15net: macb: Avoid 20s boot delay by skipping MDIO bus registration for ↵Oleksij Rempel1-3/+11
fixed-link PHY A boot delay was introduced by commit 79540d133ed6 ("net: macb: Fix handling of fixed-link node"). This delay was caused by the call to `mdiobus_register()` in cases where a fixed-link PHY was present. The MDIO bus registration triggered unnecessary PHY address scans, leading to a 20-second delay due to attempts to detect Clause 45 (C45) compatible PHYs, despite no MDIO bus being attached. The commit 79540d133ed6 ("net: macb: Fix handling of fixed-link node") was originally introduced to fix a regression caused by commit 7897b071ac3b4 ("net: macb: convert to phylink"), which caused the driver to misinterpret fixed-link nodes as PHY nodes. This resulted in warnings like: mdio_bus f0028000.ethernet-ffffffff: fixed-link has invalid PHY address mdio_bus f0028000.ethernet-ffffffff: scan phy fixed-link at address 0 ... mdio_bus f0028000.ethernet-ffffffff: scan phy fixed-link at address 31 This patch reworks the logic to avoid registering and allocation of the MDIO bus when: - The device tree contains a fixed-link node. - There is no "mdio" child node in the device tree. If a child node named "mdio" exists, the MDIO bus will be registered to support PHYs attached to the MACB's MDIO bus. Otherwise, with only a fixed-link, the MDIO bus is skipped. Tested on a sama5d35 based system with a ksz8863 switch attached to macb0. As per the SAMA5D2 device specification it supports Jumbo frames. But the suggested flag and length of bytes it supports was not updated in this driver config_structure. The maximum jumbo frames the device supports: 10240 bytes as per the device spec. 2024-09-04net: cadence: macb: Enable software IRQ coalescing by defaultSean Anderson1-0/+2
This NIC doesn't have hardware IRQ coalescing. Under high load, interrupts can adversely affect performance. To mitigate this, enable software IRQ coalescing by default. On my system this increases receive throughput with iperf3 from 853 MBit/sec to 934 MBit/s, decreases interrupts from 69489/sec to 2016/sec, and decreases CPU utilization from 27% (4x Cortex-A53) to 14%. Latency is not affected (as far as I can tell). In prevision to add new UAPI for hwtstamp we will be limited to the struct ethtool_ts_info that is currently passed in fixed binary format through the ETHTOOL_GET_TS_INFO ethtool ioctl. It would be good if new kernel code already started operating on an extensible kernel variant of that structure, similar in concept to struct kernel_hwtstamp_config vs struct hwtstamp_config. Since struct ethtool_ts_info is in include/uapi/linux/ethtool.h, here we introduce the kernel-only structure in include/linux/ethtool.h. The manual copy is then made in the function called by ETHTOOL_GET_TS_INFO. Extend wake-on LAN support with an ARP packet. Currently, if PHY supports WOL, ethtool ignores the modes supported by MACB. This change extends the WOL modes with MACB supported modes. Advertise wake-on LAN supported modes by default without relying on dt node. By default, wake-on LAN will be in disabled state. Using ethtool, users can enable/disable or choose packet types. For wake-on LAN via ARP, ensure the IP address is assigned and report an error otherwise.
