2025-04-10fbdev: Track display blanking stateThomas Zimmermann1-4/+4
Store the display's blank status in struct fb_info.blank and track it in fb_blank(). As an extra, the status is now available from the sysfs blank attribute. Support for blanking is optional. Therefore framebuffer_alloc() initializes the state to FB_BLANK_UNBLANK (i.e., the display is on). If the fb_blank callback has been set, register_framebuffer() sets the state to FB_BLANK_POWERDOWN. On the first modeset, the call to fb_blank() will update it to _UNBLANK. This is important, as listeners to FB_EVENT_BLANK will now see the display being switched on. 2023-06-27fbdev/core: Add fb_device_{create,destroy}()Thomas Zimmermann1-2/+36
Move the logic to create and destroy fbdev devices into the new helpers fb_device_create() and fb_device_destroy(). There was a call to fb_cleanup_device() in do_unregister_framebuffer() that was too late. The device had already been removed at this point. Move the call into fb_device_destroy(). Declare the helpers in the new internal header file fb_internal.h, as they are only used within the fbdev core module. 2022-05-06fbdev: Prevent possible use-after-free in fb_release()Daniel Vetter1-0/+4
Most fbdev drivers have issues with the fb_info lifetime, because call to framebuffer_release() from their driver's .remove callback, rather than doing from fbops.fb_destroy callback. Doing that will destroy the fb_info too early, while references to it may still exist, leading to a use-after-free error. To prevent this, check the fb_info reference counter when attempting to kfree the data structure in framebuffer_release(). That will leak it but at least will prevent the mentioned error. 2022-04-07fbdev/sysfs: Fix lockingDaniel Vetter1-0/+2
fb_set_var requires we hold the fb_info lock. Or at least this now matches what the ioctl does ... Note that ps3fb and sh_mobile_lcdcfb are busted in different ways here, but I will not fix them up. Also in practice this isn't a big deal, because really variable fbdev state is actually protected by console_lock (because fbcon just doesn't bother with lock_fb_info() at all), and lock_fb_info protecting anything is really just a neat lie. But that's a much bigger fish to fry. 2020-08-04fbmem: pull fbcon_update_vcs() out of fb_set_var()Tetsuo Handa1-2/+2
syzbot is reporting OOB read bug in vc_do_resize() [1] caused by memcpy() based on outdated old_{rows,row_size} values, for resize_screen() can recurse into vc_do_resize() which changes vc->vc_{cols,rows} that outdates old_{rows,row_size} values which were saved before calling resize_screen(). Daniel Vetter explained that resize_screen() should not recurse into fbcon_update_vcs() path due to FBINFO_MISC_USEREVENT being still set when calling resize_screen(). Instead of masking FBINFO_MISC_USEREVENT before calling fbcon_update_vcs(), we can remove FBINFO_MISC_USEREVENT by calling fbcon_update_vcs() only if fb_set_var() returned 0. This change assumes that it is harmless to call fbcon_update_vcs() when fb_set_var() returned 0 without reaching fb_notifier_call_chain(). 2019-06-12fbmem: pull fbcon_fb_blanked out of fb_blankDaniel Vetter1-2/+6
There's a callchain of: fbcon_fb_blanked -> do_(un)blank_screen -> consw->con_blank -> fbcon_blank -> fb_blank Things don't go horribly wrong because the BKL console_lock safes the day, but that's about it. And the seeming recursion is broken in 2 ways: - Starting from the fbdev ioctl we set FBINFO_MISC_USEREVENT, which tells the fbcon_blank code to not call fb_blank. This was required to not deadlock when recursing on the fb_notifier_chain mutex. - Starting from the con_blank hook we're getting saved by the console_blanked checks in do_blank/unblank_screen. Or at least that's my theory. Anyway, recursion isn't awesome, so let's stop it. Breaking the recursion avoids the need to be in the FBINFO_MISC_USEREVENT critical section, so lets move it out of that too. The astute reader will notice that fb_blank seems to require lock_fb_info(), which the fbcon code seems to ignore. I have no idea how to fix that problem, so let's keep ignoring it. v2: I forgot the sysfs blanking code. v3: Fix typo in callchain in the commmit message (Sam). 2017-12-04fbcon: Add fbcon_rotate_hint to struct fb_infoHans de Goede1-0/+1
On some hardware the LCD panel is not mounted upright in the casing, but upside-down or rotated 90 degrees. In this case we want the console to automatically be rotated to compensate. The fbdev-driver may know about the need to rotate. Add a new fbcon_rotate_hint field to struct fb_info, which gets initialized to -1. If the fbdev-driver knows that some sort of rotation is necessary then it can set this field to a FB_ROTATE_* value to tell the fbcon console driver to rotate the console.
