2023-11-26replay: introduce new builtinElijah Newren1-234/+0
For now, this is just a rename from `t/helper/test-fast-rebase.c` into `builtin/replay.c` with minimal changes to make it build appropriately. Let's add a stub documentation and a stub test script though. Subsequent commits will flesh out the capabilities of the new command and make it a more standard regular builtin. 2023-11-26t6429: remove switching aspects of fast-rebaseElijah Newren1-8/+1
At the time t6429 was written, merge-ort was still under development, did not have quite as many tests, and certainly was not widely deployed. Since t6429 was exercising some codepaths just a little differently, we thought having them also test the "merge_switch_to_result()" bits of merge-ort was useful even though they weren't intrinsic to the real point of these tests. However, the value provided by doing extra testing of the "merge_switch_to_result()" bits has decreased a bit over time, and it's actively making it harder to refactor `test-tool fast-rebase` into `git replay`, which we are going to do in following commits. Dispense with these bits. 2023-06-21diff.h: remove unnecessary include of oidset.hElijah Newren1-0/+1
This also made it clear that several .c files depended upon various things that oidset included, but had omitted the direct #include for those headers. Add those now. Signed-off-by: Elijah Newren <newren@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2023-06-21cache.h: remove this no-longer-used headerElijah Newren1-1/+0
Since this header showed up in some places besides just #include statements, update/clean-up/remove those other places as well. Note that compat/fsmonitor/fsm-path-utils-darwin.c previously got away with violating the rule that all files must start with an include of git-compat-util.h (or a short-list of alternate headers that happen to include it first). This change exposed the violation and caused it to stop building correctly; fix it by having it include git-compat-util.h first, as per policy. 2023-06-21read-cache*.h: move declarations for read-cache.c functions from cache.hElijah Newren1-0/+1
For the functions defined in read-cache.c, move their declarations from cache.h to a new header, read-cache-ll.h. Also move some related inline functions from cache.h to read-cache.h. The purpose of the read-cache-ll.h/read-cache.h split is that about 70% of the sites don't need the inline functions and the extra headers they include. 2023-03-21treewide: be explicit about dependence on gettext.hElijah Newren1-0/+1
Dozens of files made use of gettext functions, without explicitly including gettext.h. This made it more difficult to find which files could remove a dependence on cache.h. Make C files explicitly include gettext.h if they are using it. However, while compat/fsmonitor/fsm-ipc-darwin.c should also gain an include of gettext.h, it was left out to avoid conflicting with an in-flight topic. 2023-03-21treewide: remove unnecessary cache.h inclusion from a few headersElijah Newren1-1/+1
Ever since a64215b6cd ("object.h: stop depending on cache.h; make cache.h depend on object.h", 2023-02-24), we have a few headers that could have replaced their include of cache.h with an include of object.h. Make that change now. Some C files had to start including cache.h after this change (or some smaller header it had brought in), because the C files were depending on things from cache.h but were only formerly implicitly getting cache.h through one of these headers being modified in this patch. 2022-11-21cache.h & test-tool.h: add & use "USE_THE_INDEX_VARIABLE"Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason1-1/+1
In a preceding commit we fully applied the "index-compatibility.pending.cocci" rule to "t/helper/*". Let's now stop defining "USE_THE_INDEX_COMPATIBILITY_MACROS" in test-tool.h itself, and instead instead define "USE_THE_INDEX_VARIABLE" in the individual test helpers that need it. This mirrors how we do the same thing in the "builtin/" directory. Signed-off-by: Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason <avarab@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2022-08-03test-fast-rebase helper: use release_revisions() (again)Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason1-2/+0
Fix a bug in 0139c58ab95 (revisions API users: add "goto cleanup" for release_revisions(), 2022-04-13), in that commit a release_revisions() call was added to this function, but it never did anything due to this TODO memset() added in fe1a21d5267 (fast-rebase: demonstrate merge-ort's API via new test-tool command, 2020-10-29). Simply removing the memset() will fix the "cmdline" which can be seen when running t5520-pull.sh. This sort of thing could be detected automatically with a rule similar to the unused.cocci merged in 7fa60d2a5b6 (Merge branch 'ab/cocci-unused' into next, 2022-07-11). The following rule on top would catch the case being fixed here: @@ type T; identifier I; identifier REL1 =~ "^[a-z_]*_(release|reset|clear|free)$"; identifier REL2 =~ "^(release|clear|free)_[a-z_]*$"; @@ - memset(\( I \| &I \), 0, ...); ... when != \( I \| &I \) ( \( REL1 \| REL2 \)( \( I \| &I \), ...); | \( REL1 \| REL2 \)( \( &I \| I \) ); ) ... when != \( I \| &I \) That rule should arguably use only &I, not I (as we might be passed a pointer). The distinction would matter if anyone cared about the side-effects of a memset() followed by release() of a pointer to a variable passed into the function. As such a pattern would be at best very confusing, and most likely point to buggy code as in this case, the above rule is probably fine as-is. But as this rule only found one such bug in the entire codebase let's not add it to contrib/coccinelle/unused.cocci for now, we can always dig it up in the future if it's deemed useful. 2022-04-13revisions API users: add "goto cleanup" for release_revisions()Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason1-5/+13

2022-04-13t/helper/test-fast-rebase.c: don't leak "struct strbuf"Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason1-2/+3
Fix a memory leak that's been with us since f9500261e0a (fast-rebase: write conflict state to working tree, index, and HEAD, 2021-05-20) changed this code to move these strbuf_release() into an if/else block. We'll also add to "reflog_msg" in the "else" arm of the "if" block being modified here, and we'll append to "branch_msg" in both cases. But after f9500261e0a only the "if" block would free these two "struct strbuf". Signed-off-by: Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason <avarab@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2021-05-20fast-rebase: write conflict state to working tree, index, and HEADElijah Newren1-19/+32
Previously, when fast-rebase hit a conflict, it simply aborted and left HEAD, the index, and the working tree where they were before the operation started. While fast-rebase does not support restarting from a conflicted state, write the conflicted state out anyway as it gives us a way to see what the conflicts are and write tests that check for them. This will be important in the upcoming commits, because sequencer.c is only superficially integrated with merge-ort.c; in particular, it calls merge_switch_to_result() after EACH merge instead of only calling it at the end of all the sequence of merges (or when a conflict is hit). This not only causes needless updates to the working copy and index, but also causes all intermediate data to be freed and tossed, preventing caching information from one merge to the next. However, integrating sequencer.c more deeply with merge-ort.c is a big task, and making this small extension to fast-rebase.c provides us with a simple way to test the edge and corner cases that we want to make sure continue working. 2021-05-20fast-rebase: change assert() to BUG()Elijah Newren1-1/+2
assert() can succinctly document expectations for the code, and do so in a way that may be useful to future folks trying to refactor the code and change basic assumptions; it allows them to more quickly find some places where their violations of previous assumptions trips things up. Unfortunately, assert() can surround a function call with important side-effects, which is a huge mistake since some users will compile with assertions disabled. I've had to debug such mistakes before in other codebases, so I should know better. Luckily, this was only in test code, but it's still very embarrassing. Change an assert() to an if (...) BUG (...). 2020-10-29fast-rebase: demonstrate merge-ort's API via new test-tool commandElijah Newren1-0/+211
Add a new test-tool command named 'fast-rebase', which is a super-slimmed down and nowhere near as capable version of 'git rebase'. 'test-tool fast-rebase' is not currently planned for usage in the testsuite, but is here for two purposes: 1) Demonstrate the desired API of merge-ort. In particular, fast-rebase takes advantage of the separation of the merging operation from the updating of the index and working tree, to allow it to pick N commits, but only update the index and working tree once at the end. Look for the calls to merge_incore_nonrecursive() and merge_switch_to_result(). 2) Provide a convenient benchmark that isn't polluted by the heavy disk writing and forking of unnecessary processes that comes from sequencer.c and merge-recursive.c. fast-rebase is not meant to replace sequencer.c, just give ideas on how sequencer.c can be changed. Updating sequencer.c with these goals is probably a large amount of work; writing a simple targeted command with no documentation, less-than-useful help messages, numerous limitations in terms of flags it can accept and situations it can handle, and which is flagged off from users is a much easier interim step.
